I can only speak for myself but I believe that in thinking about summer, we all have images that we put in place in our minds as the ultimate image of summer. Of course it depends on your feelings about the season in general as to the tone of the image, but in all of us, there is some vision accompanied by the feeling.
Of course I realize that there are people out there who are not as enamored of the summer season as I am. I love summer. Perhaps the fact that I live in Maine and summer’s warmth and ease is a polar opposite to our very cold and very uneasy winters has something to do with my perspective on it, but I doubt it. My mother and sister, both born and raised here, grimace with the steamy temps. My mother is more uncomfortable on the beach than she would be if we took her to have her fingernails pulled out. She can’t stand the sand and sweat and heat.
It’s a joke between us now, our difference of opinion on this season. I can’t truly explain why I’m drawn to the bright summer colors and flip flops and flamingos. Great summer memories could be to blame.
The images here on this blog post chronicle my summer so far. Short and busy as it’s been, I’ve had it pretty good. I write this in part to provide myself with a deeper memory experience of this time in this year, but also to share with you that idea of holding on to the images of good times, whether summertime or not. Perhaps in these images you’ll see something that draws out one of your memories and solidifies it in some way.
Maybe you remember spending days at ponds like this.
Or standing in the sand at a beautiful beach.
Or visiting a seaside city and trying a new flavor of ice cream.
Maybe a cool pond in the shadow of the mountain is more what you enjoy.
Is it the promise of relaxing with a friend as the sun goes down . . . or
Fishing with your Dad?
Could your memory of summer include drinking lemonade on the porch from a straw?
Or the simpler things like the brightness of a dandelion?
Think about those times and feel the calm come over you.
When I compose these images in my viewfinder it is usually with the intent of capturing that moment selfishly for myself. It is only later, when sharing my photos that I am struck by the universal appeal of a perfect summer day, whatever perfect might mean to you.
Please share your comments on the summer season and the images you’re creating as you create memories.
Very nice photos.
I am coming back to see more as soon as I have time!
